The Lovely and Lonely

A Villanelle

The lovely and lonely are battered and blue,
While the precious young fillies sit holding the key,
And everything breaks just like day breaks too.

Here comes the van to take me and you,
Driving by night right down to the sea,
The lovely and lonely are battered and blue.

The baby was old, and it suddenly grew,
Into an adult, and it tried to break free,
And everything breaks just like day breaks too.

The tree on the road was young, fresh and new,
And its simple green leaves pulsed just like the sea;
The lovely and lonely are battered and blue.

The sun pushed them to bed and to dreams that they knew,
And the dreams were alarming to the umpteenth degree,
And everything breaks just like day breaks too.

Mindful of honesty in all that we do,
We try to make songs that sing out to me:
The lovely and lonely are battered and blue,
And everything breaks just like day breaks too.
